Philosophy

Goleta Family School is an alternative, public school program offered by the Goleta Union School District to families with children in Kindergarten through grade six. Our curriculum is child-centred with an emphasis on creative expression, independent thinking, and cooperative social skills. The unique multi-grade setting allows the students to learn at their own pace and enjoy ongoing cross-age learning. There are three classrooms for approximately 60 children. Classrooms are broken down into the following grades: K-1; 2-3; and 4-5-6. Like all public schools in the Goleta Union School District, GFS is tuition-free.

GFS is open only to people who live in the Goleta Union School District. Lottery System: March 1 Drawing

GFS operates on a lottery system. Parents must attend one information session and one tour, and then fill out an application. Application due date is February 28, 2021. Families will then be entered into the lottery, which takes place on March 1 each year. At that time, open spots in all grades are filled and waiting list order is established.

Waiting List

We maintain a waiting list for each cohort. Families who are not offered a spot immediately will maintain their place on that waiting list when the cohort advances to the next grade. We immediately notify families when spots become available. In the unlikely event that a spot opens up during the school year, you will be notified and given 24 hours to make a decision. If we don’t hear back from you within 24 hours your spot will be offered to another family. We encourage you to check in to make sure that we have your most updated contact information on file. Families are also welcome to check-in at any time to learn if their child’s position on the waiting list has advanced.

2020-21 School Year Enrollment Information

All available spots in all grades have already been filled, and there is a waiting list. There is no way to get on the waiting list now if you are not already on it.

2021-22 School Year Enrollment Information

GFS operates on a lottery system.  In order to qualify for the lottery, parents must attend a Prospective Parent Night AND a Campus Tour.  Both of those events are offered virtually this year, due to COVID restrictions.  The lottery took place on March 1, 2021 and, at that time, open spots in all grades were filled and the waiting list order was established.  If you are already on the waiting list you DO NOT need to attend again, but you can contact us to find out your position on the waiting list.

While our program is currently full for 2021-22,  we are accepting applications for the waitlist and are offering one more Prospective Parent Night and one more Virtual Tour.  Attending these events would also qualify a family to apply for Fall 2022.

We want to ensure that all applicants are confident that this educational environment is the right fit for their family and that they will be enthusiastic participants in the GFS community.

Please do not bring children to the information session or the tour. Thank you.

Campus Information

GFS is located on the campus of Foothill Elementary at 711 Ribera Drive and consists of three classrooms, a garden, and a courtyard all the way at the back of Foothill, close to the large field and Cathedral Oaks.

Feel free to contact enrollment-info@goletafamilyschool.com, if you have questions about the tour or information session. Specific questions about the school will be answered at the information session and tour.
