Philosophy

Goleta Family School is an alternative, public school program offered by the Goleta Union School District to families with children in Kindergarten through grade six. Our curriculum is child-centered with an emphasis on creative expression, independent thinking, and cooperative social skills. The unique multi-grade setting allows the students to learn at their own pace and enjoy ongoing cross-age learning. There are three classrooms for approximately 60 children. Classrooms are broken down into the following grades: K-1; 2-3; and 4-5-6. Like all public schools in the Goleta Union School District, GFS is tuition-free.

Goleta Union School District Eligibility

GFS is open only to people who live in the Goleta Union School District. Click the following link to see the district’s attendance area listed by street: Goleta Union School Attendence Areas  If your street is not listed, you are not eligible to enroll in Goleta Family School.

Transitional Kindergarten (TK) Is Not Offered at GFS

Lottery System: March 1 Drawing

GFS operates on a lottery system. Parents must attend one information session and one tour, and then fill out an application. Families will then be entered into the lottery, which takes place on March 1 each year. At that time, open spots in all grades are filled and waiting list order is established.

Waiting List

We maintain a waiting list for each cohort. Families who are not offered a spot immediately will maintain their place on that waiting list when the cohort advances to the next grade. We immediately notify families when spots become available. In the unlikely event that a spot opens up during the school year, you will be notified and given 24 hours to make a decision. If we don’t hear back from you within 24 hours your spot will be offered to another family. We encourage you to check in to make sure that we have your most updated contact information on file. Families are also welcome to check in at any time to learn if their child’s position on the waiting list has advanced.

2017-18 School Year Enrollment Information

All available spots in all grades have already been filled, and there is a waiting list. There is no way to get on the waiting list now if you are not already on it. We will be taking applications for the 2018-19 school year starting in December 2017. See below for details.

2018-19 School Year Enrollment Information

You must attend both an information session and a tour before you are eligible to apply for the lottery. If you attended an information session or tour in a prior year you do not need to attend again, but we recommend contacting us to make sure you are on record as having attended both. If you are already on the waiting list you DO NOT need to attend again, but you can contact us to find out your position on the waiting list. There will be two information sessions and two tours (TBD) offered before the next lottery drawing on March 1, 2018. The  dates are listed below.

Information Sessions

November 30, 2017: 6:00-8:00 pm

February 1, 2018: 6:00-8:00 pm

Tours

December 5, 2017: 8:30-9:15 am

February 8, 2018: 8:30-9:15 am

There is no need to RSVP to a tour or an information session—you can simply show up.  The March 1, 2018 lottery is expected to fill all open spots, so make sure you attend an information night and a tour before then. No families will be entered into the lottery without attending both an information session and a tour. We want to make sure all families are aware of the significant parent involvement aspects of this school.

Please do not bring children to the information session or the tour. Thank you.

Campus Information

GFS is located on the campus of Foothill Elementary at 711 Ribera Dr., and consists of three classrooms, a garden, and a courtyard all the way at the back of Foothill, close to the large field and Cathedral Oaks. You will be meeting back there for the parent information session. For the tour, we will meet at the flag pole near the driveway in front of Foothill School.

Please do not bring your children to either the tour or the information session. Feel free to contact Heather Stevenson if you have questions about the tour or information session. Specific questions about the school will be answered at the information session and tour.
